Affordable Housing

Key Metric

Total Number Housing Burdened
63,825
Households

Access to affordable housing is vital for a healthy and stable community. While Wichita has seen progress, challenges remain.

Unlike many cities, Wichita has seen slightly more households find affordable housing. While this is an encouraging trend, affordable housing is still difficult to attain for about one fifth of home owners and over one quarter of renters. These households are considered cost-burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of their pre-tax income on housing costs. Cost-burdened households often have to make tradeoffs with other living expenses and are at risk of becoming housing insecure. Additionally, the percentage of households making under $75,000 a year are moving away from home ownership and towards renting.
